Ten members of Tech Squad Wrestling Club represented Team Virginia at the 2021 US Marine Corps 16U & Junior Nationals, the premier national tournament for Freestyle and Greco, in Fargo, ND. Each wrestler prepared well and performed admirably at the national tournament.
Cloe Charlesworth competed in the 16U Women 138 lb weight class posting a 2-2 record. She won here opening match by fall and loss her second match 8-4 to the 2020 National Folkstyle Runner-up. In the consolation bracket she won her first match by pin while up 10-0 and lost her second consolation match to the Indiana Girls State champ who also won the Girls Preseason Nationals.
Tech Squad was represented in the Cadet division by three wrestlers, Bryson Rios, Zeke Keel, and Caden Smith. Caden Smith wrestled a great tournament losing in the round of 12 in both styles, finishing 4-2 in freestyle and 2-2 in Greco. He notched wins over a Southern Plains Regional champ from Illinois by pin and a close 3-2 freestyle win over a Greco All-American from Nebraska. Rios had tough draws and went 0-2 in both styles. Keel finished 1-2 in freestyle losing his second match 25-12.
In the Junior division, Tech Squad was represented by 6 wrestlers. Sean Coughlin had a great week in Fargo posting the best run for Team VA in freestyle with a 4-2 finish including wins over a 2x Iowa state placer, an Ohio state place winner, and an Alabama State Champ. Also earning a 402 record in Greco, Coughlin notched wins over a Colorado State Runner-up, an undefeated Oregon state champ, and an exciting last second come back win over an Iowa state champ 6-6. Brian Gordon also wrestled well at nationals posting a record of 3-2 in each style. He posted a Greco win over a state champ from Texas and a freestyle win over a 2x North Dakota state place winner. Also competing in Fargo were Chase Arnestad, Ryu Brandt, Zach Rios, and Vinny Corvetto.
